British-born Chinese artist Wuon-Gean Ho designed the first coin in the Lunar series in 2014, for the Year of the Horse coin from the Royal Mint. This is the second coin in the series, and the sheep featured on the obverse side is the result of Hos brilliant work. Similar to the horse coin, his imagery on the sheep coin combines British and Chinese heritage in one design. The Royal Mint intends to release 12 coins in the series in total, representing each of the animals in the Chinese Zodiac.
On the reverse side of the 2015 1/4 oz British Gold Sheep Coin is Hos design of two sheep. In the immediate foreground, two sheep can be seen looking at one another. A distant wooded area is visible in the distant background, while the engravings Year of the Sheep and 2015 surround the image. In the middle of the design is an engraving of the Chinese symbol for sheep.
The obverse side of the coin features Ian Rank-Broadleys latest profile portrait image of Queen Elizabeth II. the Queen’s image is surrounded by the engravings Elizabeth II, DG, and RegFidDef, as well as the face value of the coin in British Pounds.
