The Australian Silver Koala series was introduced in 2007 in both gold and silver, with bullion and proof versions struck each year. For 2016, the Perth Mint is producing the Australian Silver Koala in 1 kilogram and 1 oz weights. The all-new design of a koala, Australias famous marsupial, is featured on the reverse.
Australian Silver Koala coins are produced on an annual basis with a limited mintage for 1 oz coins and an unlimited mintage for the 1 kilo coin. The larger coins will be struck to meet demand, while just 300,000 of these 2016 1 oz Australian Silver Koalas will be produced for global distribution.
On the reverse is the newest image of the koala. In the design, an adult koala is featured walking along the branch of a tree. Above its head is the engraving Australian Koala, while the year of minting, weight, purity, and metal content are engraved below. A small P mint mark fro the Perth Mint is also featured on this side.
The obverse bears Ian Rank-Broadleys effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. Featured in right-profile relief, she is surrounded by engravings that read Queen Elizabeth II, Australia, and 1 Dollar.
Australias Perth Mint is the oldest operating mint in the country, and was the final one opened under British colonial control. The mint transferred to the government of Western Australia in 1970, and though it is not affiliated with the Royal Australian Mint, its coins enjoy legal tender status under the Currency Act of 1965.
