The New Zealand Mint began striking Lunar Series coins with the distinctive Mother of Pearl finish in 2012 with the Year of the Dragon design. That makes this 2016 5 oz New Zealand Mother of Pearl Monkey Silver Coin the fifth in the series.
On the reverse side of the coin is the image of a family group of monkeys huddled together amongst the foliage on the ground. Visible in the image are a male and female adult monkey with a younger monkey in front of them. Engravings include Year of the Monkey and the face value of 25 Dollars.
The obverse bears the familiar right-profile portrait image of Queen Elizabeth II. The image chosen for this coin is that which was designed in 1998 by Ian Rank-Broadley as the fourth-generation effigy of Her Majesty to grace currency in the Commonwealth nations.
On the reverse, the primary design of the coin features a mother of pearl finish throughout the core, giving the coins finish added visual brilliance.
The New Zealand Mint is a privately-owned facility operating in Auckland. It is the only private mint in New Zealand, and also the only mint in the country. However, it is not the official mint for the nation. The Bank of New Zealand receives coinage and paper banknotes from the Royal Canadian Mint and Royal Mint in London.
