The 2018 release of the Silver Koala coin marks the 12th annual issue of these coins, but the first time in the programs history that .9999 pure silver content has been used. Following the 2016 inaugural issue of the Australian Silver Kangaroo with .9999 pure silver, the Perth Mint has been upgrading its Silver Kookaburra and Silver Koala coins to follow suit.

Coins in BU condition show no signs of wear and tear, but minor flaws from the production process are possible on the surfaces. These small flaws range from breaks in the luster and spotted surfaces to contact marks.
