2019 is a big year for NASA as it marks the 50th anniversary of one of the greatest achievements in the history of mankind. In 1969, NASA accomplished a goal set for the nation in 1961 by President John F. Kennedy of sending a man to the moon and returning him safely to the Earth. The Apollo 11 mission to space had one goal: put a human onto the surface of another celestial body. A three-man crew consisting of Michael Collins, Buzz Aldrin, and Neil Armstrong lifted off from Cape Canaveral on Merritt Island, Florida, on July 16, 1969. Powered by a Saturn V rocket, the Apollo 11 craft would near the moon four days later.
On July 20th, 1969, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin descended to the surface of the moon in the Eagle lunar lander. Six hours after successful touchdown on the surface of the celestial body, Armstrong and Aldrin emerged from the capsule to walk the surface of the moon and plant an American flag on its surface. Though the American flag was planted, the crew viewed it as an accomplishment for all nations in saying We Come in Peace for All Mankind.
The reverse side of the 2019 1 oz Australian Anniversary of the Moon Landing Gold Coin includes the images of a mans footprint on the lunar surface and the Eagle lunar lander in the background. Aldrin and Armstrong spent a total of 21.5 hours on the surface of the moon, though much of that was spent in the Eagle lunar lander after touchdown and prior to liftoff from the surface.
On the obverse of 2019 Australian Anniversary of the Moon Landing Gold Coins is the image of Queen Elizabeth II. This is the sixth-generation design for Australian coins and is based on Jody Clarks fifth-generation portrait unveiled for British coins back in 2015.
The Perth Mint was founded in 1899 and is the oldest operating mint in Australia. Owned and operated by the government of Western Australia, the mint is not affiliated with the Royal Australian Mint in Canberra, but does enjoy legal tender status for its coins.
