In 1961, the United States was reeling as Americans found themselves seemingly far behind the Soviet Union in the Space Race. In 1959, the Soviet Union had successfully launched the Sputnik satellite. Though the Soviets struck first, America would decisively end the Space Race in 1969 by landing two men on the moon and returning the entire crew to Earth. The 1 oz Apollo 11 For All Mankind Silver Round is available from North American Mint to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the mission and is currently available to you from Wallace Precious Metals.

The Apollo 11 mission was launched by NASA on July 16, 1969, and lasted a total of more than 8 days. The mission included a crew of three men with Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin the two men sent to the surface of the moon on the Eagle lunar landing module. The mission was conceived by President John F. Kennedy in 1961 as he challenged the nation to commit its resources to send a man to the moon and returning him safely to Earth before the decade was out.
Buzz Aldrin piloted the lunar landing module as he and Armstrong approached the landing zone within the Sea of Tranquility on the moons surface. The two men spent 21.5 hours on the moon and eventually planted an American flag. As the men planted the flag, the words We Came in Peace for All Mankind were uttered and are engraved on the obverse face of the 1 oz Apollo 11 For All Mankind Silver Round. Also featured on this side is the phrase Three Men from the Planet Earth First Set Foot Upon the Moon July 1969.
On the reverse of 1 oz Apollo 11 For All Mankind Rounds is the image of an American bald eagle as it comes to land on the moon. The eagle clutches an olive branch in its talons as it lands, symbolizing the very words uttered by Armstrong and Aldrin that mankind had come to the moon on a peaceful mission.
