(Wallace Refiners) – According to the Ministry of Energy and Mines of Peru (MINEM), copper production in Peru, the world’s second largest copper producing country, amounted to 172,334 tonnes in February 2022, or 0.4% higher compared to February 2021 (171,590 tonnes).
MINEM said that this increase is due to a higher production from the major copper mining companies operating in the country, including Sociedad Minera Cerro Verde S.A.A. (+13.4%) and Minera Las Bambas S.A. (+9.9%).
At the company level, Sociedad Minera Cerro Verde S.A.A. is first with a 19.7% share in total Peru’s copper output, followed by Compañía Minera Antamina S.A. (19.6%) and Southern Peru Copper Corporation (15.8%).
The ministry added that at the regional level, Arequipa (19.9%) climbed to first place, followed by Áncash (19.8%) and Apurímac (11.9%).
